I've done my own research on the matter before, and not only was the main reason Syd Barrett was forced to leave Pink Floyd due to his own erratic behavior, he was extremely difficult to work with during sessions for Madcap due to the fact that he was losing his mind. David Gilmour and Roger Waters have talked about it, as did Roger Wyatt of The Soft Machine (The Soft Machine did a lot of the backing on Madcap).

: I'm really fascinated by the fact that I was
: attacked for mentioning the generally
: accepted notion that Syd was losing his mind
: during the sessions for Madcap and Barrett.
: If it is actually true that Syd was actually
: completely lucid, an artist at the peak of
: his powers firing out a great album, then
: this means that the general narrative of
: Syd's career is 100% completely wrong. I
: guess that's possible, but I'm dubious.
