I think he's overrated drastically by people who buy into the pseudo-intellectual hipster bullshit, as you say. Nevertheless, I also think that, even taking that into consideration, there's a lot of enjoyability to be found in his albums.
Plus, I don't necessarily think that schtick is an automatic disqualifier for being enjoyable. His schtick may be such that it's hard for me to love his albums, but I can still really really like a lot of them.
