Maybe it's the metal and/or cynical lyrics fan in me or something, but that's just about the only Waits album I don't get tired of listening to after awhile, and I think the melodies on there have the strongest effect on me. I did give Mule Variations another listen today based on your review, and although I can't agree it's better, I do see where you're coming from on it. It's a pretty effective sprawling mess of Tom's various "sides". "Eyeball Kid" followed by "Picture In A Frame"... nice.

: There's a reason "Tom Waits is my
: favorite artist I never feel like listening
: to" was in the first sentence of the
: introduction. He has lots of albums where I
: know, in terms of counting up number of what
: I instinctually want to call good songs,
: that I consider them very good and almost
: great, and yet they leave me kinda cold.
:
: I have no problems with your criticism. It's
: gotta be incredibly confusing for somebody
: to read "Yeah, there are four awesome
: songs in a row on Bone Machine, and they
: make me like the album less," even if
: that's exactly what I think.
