I tend to be earnest with them if I more want to get a point across than be silly. If there's an appropriate quote for them I'll go with that. A lot of the time, though, I'm going for snark or self-indulgent 'cleverness' (like when I made the Radiohead tagline a lyric from the Talking Heads song).
The Wings thing may well have been from a TV show, I just know I got it from my old friend.
