It has one foot in both their early years and their later years representing some of the best of both styles. I definitely agree it's probably the best album to get first.
I have huge nostalgic feelings towards The Mollusk, since it was not only my first Ween album, but also the first album to break me out of a musical funk I had gotten myself into (I like to call it the "I am 13 and therefore I know what I'm talking about when it comes to music" funk). It pretty much blew my 13-year-old brain that music could be that strange and that compelling.
I remember debating between it and C&C in the store and ultimately choosing it because I was worried what my parents might think if I bought an album with boobs and a "parental advisery" label on the cover. Though I went back and bought C&C anyway a couple weeks later (turns out my parents weren't the least bit concerned. though i was sweating bullets when I paid for it at the til, I felt like a kid trying to get away with buying a porno or something).
