Here are my year end review lists from the last two years. I don't claim to listen to every album ever or anything but it's what I heard from those years that I liked best.

albums from this year that I've loved/liked a lot:
Zammuto - Zammuto (Solo project from The Books who George recently finished ripping a new asshole. this is leagues better than The Books though. Weird pop songs with tons of vocal effects and some really catchy tunes. My album of the year so far.)
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel... (not a new artist, but if you like her style check it out. Revisiting her other records I think this may be my favourite of hers.)
The Frank Znort Quartet - Perler Fra Svin (Swedish band having a good time with old party music. Swing, blues, rock, pop, folk. a very diverse record. Features a hilarious cover of "Do you wanna dance?")
Death Grips - The Money Store (this is industrial rap so probably not your cup of tea but I'll list it anyway)
Änglagård - Viljans öga (Instrumental symphonic prog. If you know their old stuff, this is more of the same. And that's something I don't have a problem with in the slightest. I like it better than Epilog)
Jack White - Blunderbuss (again, not a new artist. but I've liked this album more than anything else he's done)
00s bands (and beyond) that are favourites of mine
New Pornographers
of Montreal
Fleet Foxes
Animal Collective
Fiery Furnaces (step carefully, some of their albums are fantastic, others are dreadful)
The Pipettes
Cheer-Accident (they've been around since the 80s but the 00s contains their highest ratio of great albums IMO)
Sufjan Stevens
St Vincent
Simon Bookish - Everything Everything (Very unique sounding album, a horn section plays ever-changing minimalism patterns throughout, and the lyrics sound like they were written by a more pretentious Bill Nye The Science guy, but performed by a cabaret singer. Touches of Zappa and XTC in there as well. His melodic ability is very strong, some very memorable songs. He hasn't put out much so I'm just recommending the one album)
