To me, music review sites are as much entertainment as they are a guide to music.
The old formula of “Name all the songs, what they sound like, and how I feel about them” gets old after several thousand reviews; in these new reviews he’s trying to give context into why a band is lauded or ignored, as well as giving his personal opinion. I like learning about the history of a band and the evolution of their sound without having to do all the research myself (John’s Yes reviews are my favorite for this very reason).
He’s also much more witty and subtle, and I find a lot of his metaphors hilarious.
In other words, I viewed his old site for the ratings and view his new site for the writing.

: Why is Starostin so boring now? His reviews
: 'intellectual' to the point of being

: George fans, please don't get offended. This
