I can't stand The XX. Too-cool-for-school Hipster BS for 17 year olds who think they're dark and mature.
Side one of The Fleet Foxes debut is nearly flawless IMO, side two starts to get a bit samey but still has some nice stuff. Helplessness Blues has a couple weak moments but is overall even better than the debut I think. Both are astounding from a production standpoint, beautiful analog sound on both records. One thing I really admire about them is how they (or rather their front-man Robin Pecknold who for all intents and purposes *is* the band) feel so genuine about what they do. In an era where everyone feels they have to be post-modern and ironic true honesty in music is highly refreshing. I don't think you're much of a lyrics guy (and neither am I to be honest) but some of Pecknold's stuff really resonates with me. "Helplessness Blues" for example is about being brought up told that you're special and one of a kind, but realizing that you really aren't special and make only a tiny contribution to the world, and yet that may be even better than being a fabeled 'great individual' because the world is greater than any of us. Is it pretentious? yeah, totally. But it's clear as day that he means what he sings 100%.
Don't feel bad if you don't get Animal Collective right away, it took me like a year to really warm up to them, they're a tough nut to crack. Well worth the effort though. Give "Fall Be Kind" a shot, that's the one that really turned me into a fan (though even it took some growing).
Also I didn't mention The New Pornographers above because I assumed you'd heard them already, but I shouldn't assume. So if you haven't heard them put 'em on the list sir. :) Their first three albums are the ones to get. They definitely fit your "anthemic, melodic, & dynamic" descriptor.
