I am the granddaughter of Sgt, Charles L. McCauley(Massachusettes) who was in the 334th 84th infantry that was at the Roer River. I have a newspaper clipping that mentions how he was promoted and given a bronze star by Maj. Gen. A. R. Bolling on the field because he led his troop through a mine field Feb. 23, 45, so that there were no casualties. He was a platoon runnder between company command post and the platoon. I also just heard of the story of how he had thought that he was jumping over a ditch one day and found out that he had actually jumped over a cliff. Luckily for him he was snagged on a tree and hung there while the enemy took shots at him but didn't try to kill him because they figured he wasn't a threat haning out on the tree and would end up dying.
He is still alive today at 84.(his wife died last year). He had 8 children, 25 grandchildren and just as many(I think more) great grandchildren.
I have been trying to find out more info about this infantry and this particular time of the war that he was involved in, so if anyone has any stories about it please post.
