Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton on June 27, 2005, 2:46 pm, in reply to "Re: Carlos Hinojosa" The Ahlem concentration camp (mainly Jewish men), near Hannover, was liberated by the 335th Infantry on April 10, 1945. The First Battalion of the 333rd Infantry went into Salzwedel on April 14, 1945. There were two concentration camps there, one on the eastern edge holding Jewish and Eastern European women and another on the western edge holding French women. There was also a concentration of Allied war prisoners in the town. Hinojosa could have been assigned to duties relative to Ahlem or the Salzwedel camps while the division was in their vicinities.

The roster listing, in the Company E, 334th Infantry section, is: "Hinojosa, Carlos, Pfc, R., Los Angeles, Calif." This would indicate that he served only in the Rhineland campaign and not in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) or Central Europe (Rhine to the Elbe). There is no PH (Purple Heart) beside his name, which would imply that he left the company due to illness, or nonbattle-related injury, and returned after hostilities ceased, May 8, 1945. If he received a Purple Heart, the roster listing is erroneous.
