Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton on October 11, 2005, 3:21 pm, in reply to "335th Infantry, Company G" On April 13, 1945, when he was wounded, the Second Battalion, per the 335th regimental after-action report for April 1945, was "in the vicinity of Hannover (Germany) guarding bridges vicinity [map coordinates (205250), (211255), (167208)], a hospital vicinity Gross Nenndorf and an Allied PW camp in the vicinity of Barsinghausen, as well as patrolling and posting military installations in the vicinity of Hannover." The precise mission of Company G on that date is not stated. The Ardennes campaign, Hannover operations, and others are described in the division history, "The 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of Germany" by Lt. Theodore Draper (Viking Press, NY: 1946) and my memoir, "Dear Captain, et al.: the Agonies and the Ecstasies of War and Memory."

The 84th Division roster lists T/Sergeant Andrew J. Merritt of Harlan, Kentucky , a member of Company G, Second Battalion, 335th Infantry, as participating in all three of the division's campaigns (Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe). However, if he landed at Utah Beach in August, 1944 he could not have been with the 84th Division at that time. The 84th’s 335th Infantry entered the continent at Omaha Beach, France at different times on November 2, 1944, disembarking part of the regiment from transport from England on that day and the remainder on the following day, November 3. If he came into France in August, he would have been with another unit from which he may have been subsequently reassigned to the 84th Division.
