Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton on November 18, 2005, 1:04 pm, in reply to "rail splitters 84th infantry" Medics were assigned to medical battalions in each of the three division regiments. From there they were assigned to line companies at various times depending upon operations and circumstances. For example, my memoir, "Dear Captain, et al.," includes excerpts from the diary of a medic assigned to Company K, 335th Infantry. This might be of general interest as all of our experiences were somewhat similar.

The 84th Division roster for the Medical Battalion, 333rd Infantry, lists a Pfc. Paul Campos of Los Angeles, California as having served in all three of the division's campaigns (Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe). Although his name is listed as Paul rather than Raul and his rank is Private First Class instead of Sergeant, this is most likely your uncle. The roster listing notes that he was awarded a Silver Star Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with one cluster, and a Purple Heart. He was most likely promoted to Sergeant after the roster was compiled just after hostilities ceased in May, 1945. If you can post information from the citations (circumstances, dates, etc.) for the Silver and Bronze Star medals and the dates we might be able to provide some information as to battle circumstances at the time the awards were granted.
