The 84th Division roster listsT/Sgt. James I. Smith of Gaffney, South Carolina as a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 335th Infantry. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and served in all three of the division's campaigns (Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe).
Battles in which his battalion fought can be traced, generally, through monthly after-action reports of the 335th Infantry which are with 84th Division records at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Suitland, Maryland facility. Locations of Company E can be traced through the company's daily morning reports which are on microfilm at the St. Louis, Missouri facility of NARA.
