Posted by Carl R. (Bob) Carlson on March 25, 2006, 10:23 pm, in reply to "Sgt Joe A. Smith, Co K, 335 INF" Like your father and Allan, I also was a former ASTP enrollee before we were all shipped off to the 84th at Claiborne. It was there that we all met and got to know each other. As Allan told you, I also recall the night of the ill-fated jeep reconnaisance trip that separated me from Sgt. Joe Smith for a long period of time. I next ran into him when we were both in the Class of '49 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem< PA. While we were in the same Class at LU, we were in different Colleges and our paths never crossed in the classrooms. We did see each other on Campus from time to time but our conversations were limited by time Your father was married at the time to the French girl you described. I don't recall ever meeting her in person and, after our graduation, I lost all contact with your father. I did hear about him once in awhile and recall that he had a health problem of some sort. If memory serves me correctly, he also played football while he was at Lehigh. Sorry, but that's all that I recall at the moment. The winds of war played out differently for each of us so we never grew to be really "close" friends. If you have any specific questions contact me and I'll answer them if it's within my power. ------ Bob Carlson
