My father, John E. Kelley, was a member of Company K. Dad was captured at the end of November 1944, during the only action that his Company participated in. Like so many WWII vets, Dad said little about his time in the Army, and almost nothing about his time as a POW. When I was going through Dad's papers, I found a small piece of paper, ( 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), with writing on it in pencil. In reading it over, I realized it's a list of the POW camps where he was in Germany, as well as when he was there.I'm posting the information here at Mr. Howerton's request.
While Dad's penmanship was always perfect, the handwriting on this piece of paper wasn't exemplary. I've made a 'best guess' in those instances when it's difficult to read. As for the Russians arriving on April 22, I remember Dad saying on several occasions that the Allied officers refused to go with the Russians when they offered to liberate the camp. The officers insisted on waiting for the US troops.
Someone else may find the information useful, which is why I'm sharing it. I still find it amazing that this little fragment of his personal history survived the POW experience, and the 61 years that followed.
