Posted by Mark Miller on September 26, 2006, 12:40 pm, in reply to "Re: Ahlem Camp" I have donated a set of my dad's photos of this camp (as well as photos of the Women's camp at Salzwedel) to the Holocaust Museum in Wash., D.C. My dad recalled the camp as horrible- smelly, filthy, lice and disease ridden, etc, and part of a litany of horrors he witnessed across Europe. He told me that some of the inmates were so weak, they needed aid in eating. One of the captions mentions one man receiving his first meal in six days. An except mentions them being denied water for cleaning, yet they were beaten for being dirty. I met one of the inmates last year in person, who was in one of the photos, and also read a narrative of his harrowing accounts. Many of the survivors became successful, living here in the USA or Canada. Yes, our wonderful country is an expensive treasure!

Hi Allen, I just read your response. The Ahlem camp was Jewish. They were transferred to Ahlem from other camps. There's been quite a bit of documentation about this camp in recent years. It was a work camp, yet out of a thousand original inmates, more than 80% died there, all suffering from beatings, malnutrition and disease. (This info is from a 1945 news article I have.)
