The 84th Division roster lists Pfc. Merlin L. Caulfield of Vienna, South Dekota as a member of Company H, 334th Infantry. He served during the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. As he was not with the division during the Ardennes campaign (Battle of the Bulge) he may have been a replacement who joined the company following the end of the Ardennes operation in late January 1945 and before the crossing of the Rhine River in early April 1945. Or, he could have been evacuated due to a non-combat injury or illness (there is no Purple Heart symbol beside his name denoting having been wounded in action) prior to the beginning of the Ardennes campaign in December 1944 and returned to the company prior to the crossing of the Rhine. .
