I searched all units of the 84th Division roster without finding a listing for Albert Herrell Johnson. The closest is a Cpl. Albert C. Johnson of San Francisco who was with Headquarters Company,1st Battalion, 333rd Infantry. The roster I have was compiled just after hostilities ceased in 1945. The personnel records for some 84th units, particularly those of the 335th Infantry, were destroyed in a battle action near the end of the war and had to be reconstructed. Consequently, there are some errors and omissions.
The 326th was one of the 84th's field artillery battalions but he is not listed in that unit's roster. Your post indicates "3rd, Army, 84th Division." The 84th was a 9th Army division. For a time we were assigned to the 1st Army but never to the 3rd. Perhaps your grandfather may have been with a 3rd Army unit and assigned to the 84th Division after hostilities ceased for service during the Army of Occupation and to return to the U.S. for discharge in January 1946. If so, discharge papers would indicate that he was discharged from the 84th Infantry. Suggest you check the letters you have for a return address. If written while with the 84th the return address would be APO 84. If you have additional information I will recheck the roster in case I may have overlooked his name. There are many Johnsons with many different 84th units.
