Per the 84th Division roster, Charles M. Stoneman of Marion, Ohio was a member of the Headquarters and Service Company and Medical Detachment, 309th Combat Engineer Battalion. The roster notes that he was killed in action but does not indicate a date. The web site of the American Battle Monuments Commission indicates that he is buried at Margratan American Cemetery in The Netherlands and lists his date of death as December 19, 1944. At that time the division was deployed along the Siegfried Line in the general vicinity of Geilenkirchen, Germany. I do not have information pertaining to the specific locale of the 309th Engineers at that time or the circumstances of Stoneman's death.
There is a record called Individual Deceased Personnel File, which often, but not always, contains information about the circumstances of death. For information go to: http://www.508pir.org/archival/deceased_personnel_file.htm
