Waldemar Smith was a highly competent and widely respected soldier. Originally from Bartlett, Tennessee, he was a recipient of a Bronze Star Medal and the only officer in Company K-335 who fought in very action during our six months of combat. He entered the company in April 1944, at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, from the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at VPI, now Virginia Tech University and served as a S/Sgt. squad leader until December 16, 1944 when he was promoted to T/Sgt. and served as the platoon sergeant of the 3rd Platoon. On February 5, 1945 he was commissioned as a 2nd. Lieutenant and was the Platoon Leader of the 3rd platoon for the rest of the war.
After the war Waldemar worked as an engineer in Pennsylvania and California (Los Angeles). On retirement he relocated to Thousand Oaks, California where he enjoyed fishing and golf until his death in 1998. The photographs may viewed a the link below.
