As a memory refresher for anyone who may remember or have photographs of S/Sgt. Frank Lail, he was a member of the original cadre of the 84th Division at Camp Howze Texas where he was assigned to Company K, 335th Infantry on December 20, 1942. He served in the company continuously until he was wounded in action on January 5, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge in the vicinity of Devantave, Belgium. He returned to the company on June 6, 1945.
Frank was from Valdese, North Carolina. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal in addition to the Purple Heart for wounds in action. For anyone who has the Company K group photograph taken at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana during the summer of 1944, Frank is the eighth man from the left in the third row from the bottom of the picture.
The battle for Devantave , where Frank was wounded, is described in detail in my memoir, "Dear Captain, et al.: the Agonies and the Ecstasies of War and Memory."
