The material here with regard to the Future of the Railspliter Society was posted as a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas. As the initial message indicates, everyone with an interest in the issue should express their views DIRECTLY TO THE SOCIETY'S NATIONAL OFFICE (Executive Secretary, 84th Infantry Railsplitter Society, Inc., P.O. Box 827, Sioux Falls, SD 57101-0827) as input for consideration at the Branson Reunion in August. Associate members, as per the Executive Secretary's piece in the February issue of The Railsplitter, are particularly encouraged to indicate their interest in continuing the Society and their willingness to assume positions of leadership. Likewise, relative to John O'Malley's suggestion as to a subsequent newsletter article, any material or suggestions pertaining to further information in the next issue of The Railsplitter, if any, should be submitted to the Executive Secretary for consideration.
My personal preference is for continuing the Society indefinitely through the involvement of associate members if there is sufficient interest. However, a case can also be made for discontinuance. Nothing lasts forever. There are problems to be resolved either way. It is, I think, particularly important that all aspects of the issue be aired and explored. Hopefully, the forum here will contribute to that but the most important thing is that ideas be expressed directly to the Society's National Office to assure that they get consideration by the Board of Directors and the membership at the business meetings at Branson.
