We are saddened to report the death of Paul Howerter (M-333) the Chaplain of the 84th Infantry Division Railsplitter Society. The following obituary is from the June 4, 2008 issue of the newspaper Morning Call:
Paul H. Howerter, 83, of Emmaus (Pennsylvania), went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in his home. He was the husband of Frieda H. (Shelly) Howerter. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage on March 20. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Edgar P. and May (Miller) Howerter. He was a graduate of Emmaus High School, Class of 1942. He was an active member of Bethel Bible Fellowship Church, Emmaus, where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent and was formerly on the Board of Elders. Paul enjoyed music, having sung in the church choir and Bethel Quartet for 60 years, played the trumpet with church groups and bands for 50 years and sung with the Zion Choral Society for 36 years. He was an Army Veteran serving during World War II in the 84th Infantry Division Co. M 333 Regiment, having fought in three major battles: the Rhineland, The Ardennes and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the combat infantry badge and three battle stars, one of which being a Bronze Star. He served as the Chaplain of the 84th Division Society, was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. both of Emmaus and was a former member of the Merchants Bank Advisory Board. Paul was the founder and owner of Howerter Furniture Store in Emmaus for the past 60 years. Survivors: Wife; daughter, Linda M. Gibson and her husband George; sons, Gary D. and Daniel P. Howerter; brother, Vernon Howerter and his wife Maelene, all of Emmaus. Grandchildren, Amy wife of Eric Dewire, Melissa, Christopher and Steven; great-grandsons, Tobias and Nathaniel Dewire; nieces and nephews. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Bethel Bible Fellowship Church, 418 Elm Street, Emmaus. Call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm Street, Emmaus and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the church. Interment in Northwood Cemetery, Emmaus. Contributions: To the church, 18049.
