Company K-335 records (Morning Report, 3.6.45) indicate only that he was assigned to the 84th Division from the 36th Replacement Battalion, a replacement depot. The time lapse from the date he entered the Army as noted on his discharge papers will give you an indication as to whether he served with a unit other than the 84th following basic training. Allow about three months or a little more for initial entry and basic training plus another two to three months for overseas transport and replacement depot processing. If much more than this elapsed he was likely assigned to frontline duty from another unit in Europe or the US.
Normally this information would be in his personnel folder (201 File). However, about 80% of these records were destroyed in a fire at the Federal Records Canter at St. Louis, Missouri in 1973. You might want to check there anyway (link below) in case his records may have survived.
