Per the 84th Division roster, T/Sgt. William F. Penker of Richmond Hills, Long Island, New York was a member of Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 335th Infantry. He served during all three of the division’s campaigns (Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe). Although I am not aware of a flame thrower unit as such, flame throwers were used mainly against German fortified pillbox defenses in the Siegfried Line but also against other heavily-fortified positions. As a Tech Sergeant he would have been the principal noncommissioned officer in a headquarters company platoon.
