I am writing a short history of King Company, 335th Infantry's attack at Lindern, 29 November 1944. Both Draper's division history and the U.S. Army's official history, The Siegfried Line Campaign, describe the railroad behind Lindern as sitting atop a 20-foot tall embankment. Lt. Carpenter's post-battle interview (quoted in Mr. Howerton's outstanding Dear Captain Et. Al.) says: "“We hit the railroad north side of Lindern. We went down a bank about 20 feet high and ran up the other side." This suggests going down into a rail cut and then back up out of it instead of up and over an embankment. The fact that King took sporadic fire all morning from Lindern behind them, once they had crossed the rail line, also suggests a cut rather than a tall berm, but none of that is conclusive. I know Mr. Howerton was present, and if he or anyone else who was present could share their recollection of this feature I would be very grateful.
