You are correct. The proper terminology is rail cut rather than embankment. Lindern was important because it occupied high ground protecting approaches to the Roer River. But it was not built on or protected by an embankment. There was an anti-tank ditch protecting the town on one side. But again, no embankment. I remember going down a bank and up again in order to cross the railroad and get to our objective where we dug in. I have recently been to Lindern a couple of times and retraced the route. The cut is still there. The town sits on relatively level land. From the railroad station one can see a modest-size hill to the left front but again that is a natural hill and not an embankment.
