If his military discharge notes service in the 84th Division, he may have been assigned there during the Army of Occupation in Germany, May-December 1945. Many soldiers from other units served with the 84th at that time and came home with the division in January 1945.
Your best bet would be to try to find a relative or someone who knew him who might be able to identify his wartime unit. Also, some governmental units in Illinois might have records of some kind relative to State residents and the units in which they served. Suggest contact with a veterans service organization, American Legion, VFW, etc. that might be able to help.
Thanks for your inquiry. This is a tough problem with no easy answers, unfortunately. Good luck.
