That night, January 8, we were virtually back to where we started the successful attack on Devantave on January 6 and not far from where Arnold Rygh {first platoon sergeant} lost his life.. We made the trip, according to {Medic} Dave Bassert, "over atrocious roads so narrow, steep and slippery that tanks repeatedly slid into 6 foot snow drifts beside the road." At some point, I remember, we got off the trucks and went into the village of Dochamps on foot. Bassert said we "entered Dochamps an hour or so after it had been taken by another outfit (elements of the 2nd Armored). Lt. Prewitt {First platoon leader} came back to us that morning although his back and kidney hurt him so he could hardly move. We spent the night in this town and lit a nice fire in a stove but we were terribly cramped for space." Dave was lucky. He spent the night in the company CP, which had just moved there. Most of us were in foxholes in a field above the town. 264
