At 17, he signed to enlist, his father, a WWI veteran, by his side. What were his thoughts ? What were their thoughts ? The papers I sorted through and he signed said he enlisted to the duration of the war plus 6 months. Six more months, really ? He finished high school and off to the ASTP. College bound in the Army way. College kids quickly in the infantry. Mr. Howerton, you know... Nov 29, 1944, a bad day for Company I. I cant say, and might never know how many lived. But there weren't many. None of them had experience. Their first day engaged in combat. No stones to throw, but I was told inexperience took them on the wrong road that early morning. They weren't where they were supposed to be. All's I know, on that day, there weren't many left. I wish I knew how many were, but I don't. My Dad, was captured. A POW.
After the war, he returned. His father had passed. Neither being able to ever say god by.I have a recording, probably spoken before going over seas "..and Dad, when this is all over and I come home, we'll go fishing, just like always "
Well, like all of them who returned, he lived his life, and a great life he lived. He took advantage of the GI bill and graduated from Worcester Poly Tech. Was a Scout Master and then a Professional for the Boy Scouts of America. A deacon in his church and work for the town in retirement up to this year.
All the summers at the camps, the evenings campfires were closed with the singing of Taps. And now, tonight, his life closing , with the respect of the bugle , and the honor of Taps, laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
He was born on his Mothers birthday, passed on 911, and laid to rest today, on National POW Day. His wife, of 61 years, who was born on Nov 11, Veterans Day.
He loved God, Country, and his Family.
