Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton on February 14, 2005, 6:29 pm, in reply to "Information on Company G" The monthly after-action reports of the 335th Infantry, on file with division records at the Suitland, Maryland facility of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), will provide quite specific information on the deployments of the 2nd Battalion (Companies E, F, G, and H) and sometimes Company G specifically. Daily morning reports for each company of the Division are on microfilm at the NARA’s Federal Records Center at St. Louis, Missouri. Most of these daily reports give the specific location of the company on that particular day. My memoir, "Dear Captain, et al.: the Agonies and the Ecstasies of War and Memory, a Memoir from World War II," traces the day-to-day movement and battle actions of Company K, 335th Infantry (Third Battalion). In most cases Company G and the Second Battalion would have been in the same general area. I visited most of the sites during the research for the memoir. Good Luck.

Sources for tracing the movement of Company G, 335th infantry depends upon the degree of precision with which you wish to follow the trail. The 84th Division, with occasional exceptions, was deployed as a unit with most of its entities in relatively close proximity to one another—a few kilometers. A starting source would be the division history, "The 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of Germany" by Lt. Theodore Draper (The Viking Press: NY, 1946). Reprints or used copies can often be found through various Internet booksellers. There may be a copy in your family somewhere as most Railsplitters had them. With that book you can trace the general area of movement if not the specific sites of G-335.
