Posted by Jim Strader on February 20, 2005, 11:36 pm The Lindern battle was my grandfather's last in WWII (he was career Army and saw combat again in Korea) as he was wounded in Lindern by a German sniper after the unit he led, 3rd BN, 335th Inf, entered the town on Nov. 29. His descriptions of the battle, the house he occupied and was wounded in, his evacuation (which resulted in further injuries) and very vivid and are a true testimony to the bravery of so many he served with. I have read the Draper unit history, Dear Captain and material from the MHI, and also have a news clipping of an AP dispatch filed Nov. 29 as the battle for Lindern began. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who recalls or has information about my grandfather. Personal anectdotes are most welcomed. He was LTC Robert E. Wallace and was from West Virginia. I know that he remained active in Railsplitter activities and reunions over the years. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

I was lucky enough to hear my grandfather's stories of his service with the 84th before he died in 1991 and am grateful to all who have contributed to message boards, histories and books like "Dear Captain."
