My grandfather died about five years ago in Greensboro, NC. He was born and raised in Wilson, NC. He was Harry W. Abbitt, Company Commander "B" 335th Infantry Regiment under the 84th Infantry Division. I am 26 years old and had many conversations with him. Very few had to do with anything that had to do with WWII. It was just too painful for him to talk about. Shortly after his death, my grandmother received two purple hearts that he was supposed to have recieved, but did not while he was still alive. Shortly after the war, he received a Silver Star for something he did in or near the town of Marche, Belgium in or around Christmas 1944. Since he never talked about it, I don't know the story surrounding his metal. I know that he went back to the town about fifteen years ago and there was a reunion and a parade that followed. The town shut down and all stores closed to honor all of the members of the division that saved the town. If anyone knew him, I would love to hear from you.
