Posted by Allan Wilford Howrerton on March 17, 2005, 12:36 pm, in reply to "Re: Information on 2nd Lt Milton Ray Starr" Second Lt. George T. Sanders of Sacramento, California was killed in action on January 23, 1945 during the battle for Ourthe, Belgium. This was the last major battle of the Ardennes Campaign (Battle of the Bulge). My unit, Company K, 335th Infantry led the attack at Ourthe and it would have been in support of that attack that Lt. Sanders lost his life. The division roster indicates that Lt. Sanders was awarded two Silver Star medals. Although I do not know the details of his action at Ourthe, or whether his second Silver Star was awarded in relation to that action, the battle itself is described in detail in my memoir, "Dear Captain, et al." referenced above. Cpl. Douglas F. Ward, per the division roster, was from Glen Head, Long Island, New York and served in all three of division’s campaigns—Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe.

November 29, 1944—the date of then Sergeant Starr’s Silver Star award— was the opening day of the battle for Lindern, Germany, one of the major operations which breached the Siegfried Line and led to the subsequent crossing of the Roer River and the breakthrough to the Rhine. The battle circumstances are described in detail in Chapter IV of the division history, "The 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of Germany" by Lt. Theodore Draper, and my memoir, "Dear Captain, et al.: the Agonies and the Ecstasies of War and Memory, a Memoir from World War II."
