I am looking for information on my grandfather, Neil A. Hielsberg, SN: 36982715 and his participation in the 84th Infantry. I am active duty Army and will soon be going to Europe on orders. My family and I would like to retrace some of the steps of the 84th through Europe, specifically, my grandfather's.
According to his discharge paperwork, I know he arrived at the end of Jan 45, and was wounded 17 Feb 45 in France. I have several photos of him with friends in what seems to be after the war in Rodheim and Geissen, Germany. His honorable discharge papers list his organization as K Co., 30th Infantry, although we were always told by him that he belonged to 335th Inf Regt, 84th Inf Div. The photos seem to support the 84th Inf statement as well as you can make out the railsplitter patch.
If anyone out there knows him or has information on him please contact me. I would like to see the exact areas that he walked while in Europe. If there's any recommendations on reference material, feel free to let me know as well. I'm looking for detailed locations of his unit and his actions. Additionally, he received a belated bronze star some years ago and I would like to know what he did to earn it. Incidently, he is still alive and doing fairly well but details are hard to obtain when talking to him on this subject. Thank you very much and God Bless America and all you veterans out there. ATTACK!!!
