Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton on March 29, 2005, 3:53 pm, in reply to "My Grandfather Neil A. Hielsberg" If your grandfather was wounded February 17,1945 in France, he would not have been with the 84th at that time as it was not in France. The division was in eastern Netherlands/western Germany preparing for the crossing of the Roer River that took place on February 23rd. I don’t think the 30th Division was in France then either. One possibility is that he may have been assigned to the 84th after recovering from wounds following the end of hostilities. The roster was compiled shortly after V-E Day. The 30th Division returned home two or three months ahead of the 84th. So if he was in the 84th for a time he may have had enough points for transfer to the 30th Division to return for discharge. Unless you have his personnel records it will be difficult to determine where he was in Germany. Most of the WW II records were destroyed by a fire at the Federal Records Center in St. Louis in the early seventies. However, twenty percent were not. Might be worth trying. For information go to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) site below.

Neil A. Hielsberg is not listed in the 335th Infantry, 84th Division roster. However, 335th records were destroyed in a battle action near the end of the war and had to be reconstituted. As a consequence there are some errors and omissions.
