Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton Unless you have his personal papers from the war it will difficult to check this. It would be reflected in his official personnel records (201 file). However, about 80% of these records were destroyed in a fire at the Federal Records Center in St. Louis in the nineteen seventies. However, you might want to submit a request anyway just in case his records may have survived. For information go to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) web site at the link below. Link: NARA

Per the division roster, Pfc. Martin G. Solano of Hollister, California was a member of Company F, 333rd Infantry. He served in two of the three 84th Division campaigns (Rhineland and Ardennes) but not Central Europe. As he is not listed as having received a Purple Heart for being wounded in action he may have been medically evacuated during the Ardennes campaign (Battle of the Bulge) and never returned to duty with the division, or at least not until after the end of hostilities. There were many cases of frozen feet, frostbite, and other illnesses during the Battle of the Bulge and it is quite likely, although not certain, that he was one of these cases.
