I spoke to my father (Wilkie King) and he remembers he went overseas the Winter of 44. He was in Bastogne Belgium came out of there and his outfit took Hanover Germany. He remembers crossing the Roer River, going to Adolph Hitler Airport sometime in 45 and was supposed to go to Berlin when the war ended. He said they loaded for the states in Liverpool England. The only names he can remember now is a Lt. Handlin and a Sawyer from Tennesse. He talked about when he was in Belgium it was very cold and snowing and it was hard to keep your feet dry so he would put an extra pair of socks inside his shirt to change with. He was never wounded but he said it was a hard time for all. He retired when he was in his 70's , has been very active until a heart attack this past March. He still lives on a small farm in the Cane River section of Yancey County. He said he used to get a magazine called "The Railsplitters" but hasn't gotten one for some time.
He has 4 children, 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. His memory is not as well but at 90 years and still living by himself he is blessed.
