Posted by Allan Wilford Howerton You might want to query the St. Louis Federal Records Center facility of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Most WW II personnel records were destroyed by fire in the nineteen seventies. But about twenty percent survived and you might get lucky.

Regrettably, I have very little information about Lt. Bertetti. The 84th Division roster notes his hometown as Detroit, Michigan and as KiA 12.23.44. It also indicates that he served as a "Platoon Officer." That is, he would have been a platoon leader in one of companies of the 335th Infantry. Unfortunately, the roster lists all regimental officers in a group rather than by companies as for enlisted men. On December 23, 1944 the 335th was deployed in the general vicinity of Marche-en-Femenne, Belgium having arrived there a couple of days before after withdrawal from the Siegfried Line to defend the far northwest sector of Belgium Bulge. Most of the action on December 23 centered around the defense of Rochefort, south of Marche. This mainly involved a counter-reconnaissance screen by the 335th’s Third Battalion (Companies I, K, L, and M). But the two other battalions were also involved in various defensive actions in other areas around Marche. So, without knowing his company it is not possible to say where he was killed. 81
