Americans are not prohibited from going to Cuba. They just can't spend any $$$ there (other than for emergency repairs). You could bring a Canadian or Mexican buddy along and have them pay for everything (or atleast tell American officials that they did) and then return the favor to your buddy by paying for everything once you get to Isla Mujeres. The likelyhood of American officials even finding out that you were in Cuba is very slim because the Cuban authorities don't actually stamp your passport, they issue you a seperate piece of paper and then stamp that instead.
