My apologies for reposting this, but I had not seen this more appropriate thread.
There was (and may still be) much confusion in the Harbor whether or not there is access to dock near Publix. So I decided to investigate it myself.
The resulting article of my findings was published at cruising guide author Claiborne Young's (Salty SouthEast) Cruiser's Net (Cruisersnet.net).
The short version: It is a fantastic opportunity to dinghy dock at Hurricane Hole Marine for $5/day. My information is directly from Hurricane Hole Marina's Dockmaster Chris Pitts. He says this is not to be used for routine dockage, but offered as a convenience for those wishing to shop at Publix and stores nearby. Multiple trips on the same day are just fine.
All notions about tresspassing and this and that are simply that: rumors. But also there's a mix of misinformation of previous happenings there. I do know that Chris Boyle of Smorgasboat worked very hard with the landing's previous owners (Sombrero Resort) to have a landing there for the convenience of we in the Harbor via his water taxi service. It was abused by ingrates and pulled by Sombrero. Very sad. I miss Chris and his water taxi service in the Harbor. I'm glad he still does Harbor tours and sunset cruises.
For those who don't know: Hurricane Hole Marina is located in the easternmost basin of BKH (formerly a part of Sombrero Resort). There is a ton of room for dinghies and its close proximity (Publix is right across the street and many of Marathon's most frequented businesses are nearby as well) makes the ease of docking there when time is short or shopping large impossible to beat.
If the Dockmaster is not there, just leave your fee in the till. It might be wise to write your dinghy registration number on a note with the $5. All dinghies should be off the dinghy dock by 8:00 pm to discourage misuse (i.e., bar hopping).
