Hi Mark,
I would answer with, "It all depends on your skills."
Since you've asked the questions, I'll be quite honest and admit you worry me somewhat. If you were skilled, you'd simply look at your charts and evaluate the time when also taking the weather outlook into consideration; do the math, then see if it is viable for both vessel and crew.
If one does not know how to do such, then perhaps
it may be be too much if the winds kick up and become unruly during your sail.
Or perhaps you are skilled and just want the opinions of others. My opinion, in a nutshell: The more the hurry and worry today; the less the liklihood of a smooth sail or good time had tomorrow.
I know that it's tough when you live elsewhere and plan to sail down here. If experienced, a sail to Key West should be no biggie, but it sure can be. A group of German men left Key West recently and proceeded to hit a reef just eleven miles past Key West on their way to Bimini. It does happen!
Take a deep breath and answer this: Do you have the experience and know-how to handle the task at hand?
Therein lies your answer!
Big Hugs,
Charmaine
