Many years ago, during the fight to keep the liveaboards, I said that Boot Key Island WOULD be developed.
Resently I said rather than create more boat movement in "the Harbor"
... the city could develope Boot Key Island for their NEW slips.
Why did I say the first? Because IF someone takes the time to READ the deeds for the Island land, they will find that the island can be developed USED FOR RECREATIONAL USE ONLY.
One can sell their property over and over again; however, until the courts remove the Deed Restriction, the restrictions stand.
Oh... but wait, there is another way around that... the city can try to take the property through eminent domain. Which is what I said would happen.
With the deed restrictions, you can still only develope the island for Recreational use.
Well lets see, a marina with boat slips, hotels, bike paths, nature trails, dive trips, more hotels, bars, time shares, oh did I say MORE hotels. CAN ALL BE CONSIDERED "Recreational use"
So the city will not need court action; however, those opposed to the development WILL.
The ONLY way to win this one is bring in MANY environmental groups. And I do mean MANY! The ONLY way to stop any developmenet is to MAKE it MORE costly for them to fight than the profits they could receive.
AND you MUST have the voter behind you!
