My notion is that other teams, by opposing you, give your team the opportunity to excel, and therefore, they are necessary to your teams success.
Every team has fans that are jerks, and fans that are great people, and everything in between. I used to really dislike Minnesota because of all of the jerk fans I had encountered, but that's the fallacy of the small sample.
