But this is an area where you can still find somebody after the 2nd week in free agency. I know you need to cover your week 6 bye week for Manning, but Grossman? The one pre-season game I saw for the Bears, he looked absolutely gut-pukingly awful. So I looked at the match-ups for week 6 to see if there were any situational QBs for you. Of course you don't NEED to make a change, but the one thing the Vikings have going for them is a very decent defense and that's who Grossman goes against week 6. A couple guys who may be available in your league for free agent pickup and who I like better than Grossman (which leaves things pretty open), are either 1st year transfer QBs, or ones who had a bad year. Jake Delhomme (Car) (who would be a nice double up with Steve Smith) goes against Arizona. I don't know if he's gone in your league. But a match-up with Arizona can always turn into a shoot out. Arizona can put up points, but their defense is still shaky and Jake might have to fling it. Trent Green-Mia (looked good in his last pre-season game) is probably available and goes up against Cleveland (the worst team I've seen in preseason). I think Miami wants to be a running team, but from what I saw despite having Ronnie Brown they're going to have to stay balanced because they don't have the o-line to just smash it. Ronnie Brown is a stud in the making though...and the QBs best friend is a good RB. Matt Schaub (Hou) may have to throw it a lot to play catchup and he has a decent receiver in Andre Johnson (who is under-rated IMO), in week 6 he goes against Jacksonville (in their last pre-season game their defense was very unimpressive). I'm not in love with Schaub but he could be a decent fill-in against a defense with d-line issues. Steve McNair (Balt) still has some juice in his arm, though the legs are dead. He may be taken, but is one of those guys that used to be over-rated but is now under-rated. I'm just not sure about the St Louis defense (who he goes up against week 6) because I haven't watched them. Jason Campbell (Wash) was a guy I liked coming out of college, but thought it might take 2 years before he could really play in the league. He sat behind Brunell a year, and took over last year...so this might be his year ... but the Green Bay defense can get a rush on, and I just don't care for the match-up. Daunte Culpepper (Oak) had a good game in pre-season but a.) he still hasn't beat out Josh for the job and b.) week six is against San Diego's really good defense--which could mean whoever the QB is might have to really pass a lot. He could also get killed by Merriman. Then there are a couple other guys: Chad Pennington (whole team looked immensely out of sync), Jeff Garcia (not sure who he's throwing too, but they'll need to be able to get YAC...his o-line didn't look like it helped him much), Tarvaris Jackson (his best play is the hand-off), Byron Leftwich (looked really bad and could lose his job to Garrard by week 6), Brodie Croyle (or Damon Huard), whoever Cleveland is playing in week 6 (still a mystery Frye (gag) or Quinn (double-gag)). They are probably available and should stay available.
I always ended up taking a rookie as my #3 RB fairly high because my 2nd RB was shaky...and he always outperformed my #1. I think Brandon Jackson will end up as your #2 RB. At this point there probably aren't many choices for you to fix any weaknesses. You might get lucky at some point in free agency, but with a 12 team league you are probably going against some teams in the same position you are in.
Eli Manning (NYG) goes up against Atlanta on Monday night, but I don't recommend him even though the Manning and Manning combo could be fun. Correspondingly, Joey Harrington (Atl) goes up against the NYG. Again I'm not recommending him, but then again he's a system QB in a system offense, so it could be a really good fit for him. And the Giant's defense has been unimpressive in pre-season. I'd certainly rather take Joey over Eli, anyway.
