But there is no denying that Manning is THE prime QB to take: not only does he give very good to great production each week, Manning is also a no-brain starter each week against any defense, except his week 6 bye, because he's so darn durable. If YOU want Manning, though, you're going to have to take him at #2 overall, and that would be a waste when you can get one of the premier RBs. This year, I see a lot of questions at the QB spot and a lot of time-sharing RBs, so it would be a good idea to get 2 full-time RBs and your QB in the first 3 rounds. Of course, the other people in your league are probably thinking the same thing. At #2 you will have your pick between LJ and SJ. LJ is starting to slip on most draft boards, I hear. And it's not just about the hold-out leading to injury issue. I've been watching Hard Knocks on HBO, and Kansas City is a team in danger of picking very high in the draft next year...and that doesn't usually bode well for a RB's production. Additionally, I just like SJ as a person better than LJ. I dislike drafting the T.O.s of the NFL because it's just so hard to root for them...my own little personal thing, though. Every year that I played in the past, I scrounged the waiver wire and patched together my WRs with free agent pickups...and that's a much better way to go than trying to patch together the RBs or QBs. But if you can get one Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, or Marvin Harrison (though IMO his production is starting to diminish) then that is one spot you don't have to worry about during the season. It's hard for me to know who is going to be available at your 23 & 26. I've only done 10 team leagues, but I would imagine that the RB runs are even worse than in the 10 team league. I think you would feel less tense throughout the draft if you could get your RBs settled first. Year after year, I and one other guy in the league would scoop up the rookie running backs in the 2nd round or early 3rd round...and we were razzed for reaching. He and I were always in the top 3 or 4 teams at playoff time. There was one year I took 4 RBs in the first 6 rounds. So, if at #23 or #26, you didn't get one of the safe RBs at 23 I would pull the trigger on gambling for the rookies Marshawn Lynch or Adrian Peterson. I would take either one at #26 because while Adrian might be considered part of a RBBC there is no way they're going to keep him on the bench for Chester Taylor. And while Lynch has an iffy run blocking line, he is just one of the RBs that can make something out of nothing. Be prepared for your cohorts to give you the business about reaching, though. I would just smile and wink. Here are my top 60 or so players. 1. LT 13. Chad Johnson 25. Edgerrin James 37. Terrell Owens 49. Randy Moss You can wait to get a TE this year. There are a bunch of pass catching TEs. Remember when it used to just be Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharpe and Ben Coates? Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Todd Heap, and Jememy Shockey will be taken before #10, but I like Vernon Davis, Chris Cooley, Heath Miller, Greg Olsen, Tony Scheffler, Bo Scaife and Kellen Winslow to be almost as valuable and a lot cheaper. Each of the TEs I listed has a young QB, plus shaky WR situations, which could lead to some sleeper type production from the TEs this year. I'm more uncertain about Marcus Pollard and Alge Crumpler. Pollard has been having a really good off-season from what I've heard and he fits with the WCO really well. But Hasselbeck is no youngster and won't need a security blanket. Alge Crumpler's value takes a hit without Vick, and it looks like his knee isn't quite right. QBs: Philip Rivers, Matt Hasselbeck, Jay Cutler, Ben Roethlisberger, Bret Favre and Alex Smith should have more up than down production. Harrington, Romo, Losman, and Leinart will be up and down based on matchups. My sleepers (#2 QBs) are Trent Green, Steve McNair, Jason Campbell, and Matt Schaub. Grossman, Delhomme, eManning, Pennington, Culpepper/McCown, Garcia, Leftwich, Huard and Fry/Quinn are huge risk/little reward type players IMO.
If you can get a really good solid RB with your 2nd round pick, I usually choose to do that. By the time the end of the 3rd round comes up, the RBs are pretty picked over.
