We have upgraded the secondary, true. However, until the Lions put their energy into getting the OL and DL fixed with talent and depth, there will be little for us to cheer for come the Fall. Talent in the defensive backfield will do little good if there is no pass rush and the run isn't stopped before it gets to the DBs.
For years the Lions have had the opportunity to select the best OL, DL, and/or LB. Instead they wasted the early picks on WRs and QBs while great players slid to teams that picked below them! It will be even tougher to upgrade the lines now that the selections will come after the top tier talent is gone. Willis (LB), Thomas (OL), and Adams (DE) are examples of talent the Lions wouldn't take recently. The team needs a great middle LB, DE, and left tackle.
Our scouting staff has erred in rating players for so long I have no confidence in the Lions ability to build through the draft with the current front office personnel. Poor drafts have left the team with a void of talent since Millen took over. When I see what the GM of the Tigers has done in less time, I am appalled at the Lions plight! Nuts!
Blocking and tackling are still the most necessary abilities to have on any NFL team. It all starts with having talent along the lines. Getting rid of Rogers in this trade was a good move and consistent with what Marinelli stands for, but it is also true that the most talented Lions DL by far is now elsewhere. His talent will be hard to replace.
