I’ve given this a lot of thought and the Lions must have, MUST HAVE, a pass rush for the Tampa 2 defense to work. No other defensive “fix” is going to matter if they don’t have a pass rush. That said, only Kalimba Edwards is gone and no new DE was signed this FA. White, Smith, 5-0 and DeVries are all who are on the roster (yes I’m ignoring DeGrate and Harriott on purpose). The Lions must and will draft a DE. The Lions have kept 5 DE’s for each of the past few years now.
I’ve given this a lot of thought and the Lions must have, MUST HAVE, a pass rush for the Tampa 2 defense to work. No other defensive “fix” is going to matter if they don’t have a pass rush. That said, only S. Rogers is gone and the only new DT that was signed this FA is Darby. Cody, Redding, Moore and Darby are all who are on the roster (that’s it, just 4 guys). The Lions must and will draft a DT. However, they usually only keep 4 and Darby and Redding are going no where.
I’ve given this a lot of thought and the Lions must have, MUST HAVE, a run game for the Offense to work. No other “fix” is going to matter if they don’t have a run game. That said, only Kevin Jones and TJ Duckett are gone and no new RB was signed this FA. Calhoun, Cason, and Bell are all who are on the roster (that’s it, just those 3 guys). The Lions must and will draft a RB (maybe more then one even).
I’ve given this a lot of thought and the Lions should have, SHOULD HAVE, a better O-Line for the offense to work. No other offensive “fix” is going to matter if they don’t have decent blocking. That said, the Lions have some options at Guard already on the roster, they love their center and their left tackle, so the only position they could upgrade is RT. I don’t think Dunn or Morris are the answer, they usually keep 4 Tackles, so a Right Tackle will be drafted but will he be able to take the starting job over for Foster or Scott at some point this year? Will he be ready and when? (I do not agree with the Lions take on their LT and C, but I’m trying to be real here with how they see it).
I’ve given this a lot of thought and the Lions should have, SHOULD HAVE, better play from their MLB for the Tampa 2 defense to work. No other defensive “fix” is going to matter if they don’t have better play from the Linebackers. That said, only Bailey and backups are gone and no new LB was signed this FA. Sims is solid, Lenon can play MLB (poorly) and may be moved to SSLB (maybe). The Lions must and will draft a LB. Maybe two. Will it be a SSLB or a MLB though? Are they willing to live with Lenon at MLB or do they think Buster can move up to starter at some point this season? Lots of questions on LB, but they are still short on bodies (only 5 are on the roster and they usually keep 6).
It also wouldn’t hurt to add depth at FB and CB.
So here’s your draft…
Tier One: RB and DE
Tier Two: DT and OT and LB
Tier Three: FB and CB and another RB and another LB
And they can’t afford to miss on any of them.
That just isn’t going to happen.
They will have to make do at some of the positions, but they can not make do with RB and DE. They probably can’t make do with DT, RT or LB either.
Can Millen and Marinelli hit 5 out of the draft even?
Here’s to 2009! (had to zing Millen, he’s responsible for all this).
