I keep hearing from my "sources" (such as they are) that if Mendenhall is there at 15 the Lions are taking him.
They don't expect him to make it.
That would explain the Forte interest and gives me thoughts, thank you.
Any time you hear of them doing a private meeting or pro-day don't be afraid to share it in here if you have time ;-) *(Yeah, I know you don't owe me one).
As for the Cap, here is what I know is coming up... on June 1st Kalimba's salary is off the books (he was cut but as a June 1st designation, and so his salary stays on the cap until June 1st). That's $3.9 mill and he won't get his $100,000 roster bonus for camp... so $4 mill even off the cap on June 1st.
Next, CJ is going to get an $8 million advance on his guaranteed salaries (future years). Since it's guaranteed and from future years it becomes a singing bonus designation and will be spread over the cap for the remaining 5 years of his contract... or $1.6 mill per year bonus allocation against the cap.
That's it for existing moves. $4 mill freed up, $1.6 mill spent, net cap positive of $2.4 mill (not enough to sign the draft picks).
However, the Lions have 65 or so players on the roster right now, only the top 51 salary cap hits count against the cap until the season starts, and many of these guys are making the upper tier minimum wages (more years in the league gets more minimum wage)... so salary cap hits right now of $485,000 don't count... and if a player is signed for more then $485,000 then a player who does make $485,000 no longer counts against the cap for the time being. They can easily sign their late round picks for under $485,000 in cap, and so they should be able to handle the draft picks without cutting anyone else (June 1st cuts) but it'll be close.
Any FA pickups HAVE to be for 1 year vet minimums right now (they only count $485,000 against the cap if the signing bonus is $40,000 or less, and they have done a few of these already).
Any other FA pickups for more money will require a cut to free up the cap first.
That's what I know at the moment, of course, I could be off just a little on my cap chart because I still do not know what Brian Kelly got for a signing and roster bonus... I do have his salaries though. So I guessed at the bonuses.
