Whoever it is has to be able to get the players to believe, and buy into what he's saying. Marinelli did a good job with that for the most part, and all of his efforts to change the culture have to be continued. There can't be a Wayne Fontes type, player's coach.
Marinelli got bogged down with being the d-line coach and a defensive talent evaluator, and never really fully got into the head coaching role. Whoever is hired must be able to focus on the overall picture. Therefore, he needs to be able to put good coaching personnel around him.
In reality, even though not every Lion coach was unilaterally fired, the new coach is probably going to bring in his own guys. They are married to the ZBS blocking scheme and I think they are married to the 4-3 defense...even though I would love for them to go with a hybrid 4-3/3-4 scheme. So, any prospective HC needs to get his short list adjusted to that.
Based on the above, I think a coach with some previous head coaching experience would have a better handle on things.
